My two-year-old son has had to sleep in a regular bed — instead of his normal crib — while we’ve been on vacation. So far, he doesn’t quite have it down yet. In this picture, he looks like he passed out in his room from a drunken chocolate milk stupor.

I have a lot of friends who are freelancers and technically I’m self-employed at Sitening. I ran across an article on Salon about What every freelancer should know as it relates to finances, taxes, health, etc… If your interested, you should read the entire article, but here’s the quick gist of it:

  1. Get a tax advisor.
  2. Set up a different bank account for your business earnings.
  3. Pay your taxes quarterly.
  4. Set aside a regular percentage of your income — enough for state and federal — into a tax fund that you do not touch.
  5. Do not wear your pajamas after noon.
  6. Build in rewards.
  7. Exercise.
  8. Take a shower.
  9. Get health insurance.
  10. Open an Individual Retirement Account, better known as an IRA.
  11. Do not own a coffeemaker.
  12. Consider sharing office space with other self-employed people.
  13. Socialize with other people in your field.

Karrie Jacobs at Salon.com wrote an interesting article about campaign logos called May the best logo win

She discussed the quality and merits of each leading candidates’ logo. The best part was how Clinton’s logo isn’t even really a logo. She went on to explain how Obama’s logo was created and how his logo truly is a “logo”

Obama’s signature “O” is the product of Chicago-based branding firm Sender. A true logo, one that is recognizable apart from the candidate’s name, it uses the traditional color palette. “You can’t walk away from the red, white and blue completely,” argues Sol Sender, the company’s president, “so what can you do that’s new and fresh?” Sender’s team came up with a white sunrise against a blue sky, over a landscape implied by red and white stripes. Sender labels it a symbol of “hope.”

Of all of the logos (McCain’s, Clinton’s, etc…), it obvious that regardless of who you’re for, Obama has the most aesthetically pleasing one of the bunch.

I’m finally giving into the goal of Inbox Zero – the art of not letting your email inbox collect hundreds of email messages. I generally struggle with having several hundred email messages in my inbox.

The tool I plan on using is OmniFocus, which is an application that’s based on Getting Things Done (GTD). With OmniFocus, I can dump any task, idea or followup I need to do into it, and delete (or archive) my email messages.

I’ve already started this, and so far it’s going well. Hopefully, I can successfully build a habit out of doing this and free up my inbox, and also a small part of my life.

“Ars Technica“http://arstechnica.com/apple.ars is an excellent source for Apple related news. Unlike most Apple-related sites that rehash info from each other, Ars consistently comes up with new and interesting content. Their latest article, New Chax beta brings unified buddy list , is what got me to write this post. I’ve been waiting forever for this hack (or to just have Apple include the feature). Thanks Ars for the tip.

So check out the Apple section of Ars Technica and while your there, create a profile and participate in their community.
